participatory project specifically for the "Reassembly" exhibition
location: Shkaf Library (Saint-Petersburg, Russia)
media: installation, fabric, synthetic padding, video object
In her project, artist Anna Slobozhanina reflects on the definition of folk art. In her opinion, the answer lies in the very name - it is what is created together, it is the space of collective unconsciousness. Everyone contributes their own input, but the power lies in unity, in it there is beauty.
The installation consists of two parts. To create a canvas embodying the idea of collaborative creativity, the artist asked local residents to bring a piece of fabric of any size and quality. In October 2022, together with voluntary participants in the project, she sewed a large fabric using these pieces according to the principles of a patchwork quilt.
The shape of the canvas resembles a little house, similar to those built by children by placing a blanket on a table. It is a place where one can seek shelter and hide. It is a space for contemplation.
A video wall with fragments filmed by the artist during the sewing process complements the image of a secret hidden place. The chaotic video sequence immerses us in a meditative process of stitching. It is a simple action through which anyone who wishes, here and now, in the moment, can experience tradition.
